Royces, courtesy of Otto, travelled up to Barton in search of their first away league victory this season. Still struggling with injuries in the back line the squad was very forward biased rendering the speed limiter on the bus useless. The team again featured a number of changes, particularly in the back line with several forwards filling in.
Royces kicked off against the wind in the first with Golding catching the kick off and tearing up the turf before being halted just outside the 22. Royces were holding their own in the forwards with solid scrummaging and good work in the line out, especially on the oppositions throw. On a rare foray into the Royces half Barton landed a penalty. Towards the end of the half a Barton back was shown a yellow card for punching. Royces pressed hard but couldn’t find a way through. Half time 3-0.
The second half started as the first had finished with Royces pushing hard to find a break through. They were awarded a penalty five minutes into the 2nd half, but McLaughlin’s attempt drifted wide. Royces continued to try and get points on the board but struggled to create any opportunites. With fifteen minutes to go following another excellent line out Royces were pressing in the right hand corner. Poole appeared to have grounded the ball but the referee disallowed the try for Sanderson locating Bartons meat and two veg stall. A lucky escape for Barton but it served to fire them up. Barton drove up field and pressed hard in the final ten minutes scoring two unconverted tries. Final score 13-0.
Another good performance from Royces away from home who were by no means outplayed they just need to add a clinical attacking edge to their game. Next up a home time against Clee in round 5 on the EDF National Junior Vase. Performances of note from Golding, Sanderson and Hildebrand.
Finally well done to James Gormley who broke the club record for appearances in 80 minutes, setting a new standard of 4. James, you still owe £15 subs.
Team: Ed Barker, John Scott, Duncan Myres, Alex Gill, Malcolm Lee, Paul McLaughlin, Dave Poole, Ian Hildebrand, Adam King, Luke Daigneault, Callum Elliott (Otto), Nick Golding, Mike Brown, Dan Sanderson, Ian Baker. Subs: James Gormley
